Where Can I Buy Recreational Weed in Canada?
Canadians and stoners alike, rejoice! In June, Canada’s parliament finally passed a bill called the Cannabis Act legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, allowing us to experience the full benefits of marijuana without the legal stigma. To celebrate this massive development, consider reciting this cannabis poem, courtesy of AngryBuds.
Starting in 2001, Canada only allowed its citizens to utilize the plant for medical purposes, requiring a medical marijuana card and a doctor’s approval. On October 17th, 2018, the law will officially go into effect. Canada will be the second country to fully legalize the use of cannabis, alongside Uruguay. However, this law will not come without plenty of rules and regulations put into place by the government.
The bill, which includes 40 amendments, outlines who is allowed to purchase the product and what criteria consumers must follow. As per the bill, any adult over the age of 18 is allowed to purchase and possess up to 30 grams of marijuana for personal consumption and can own up to four plants per household. The bill also outlines the legal consequences of misconduct, such as significant criminal charges for selling to minors. Those who are under the legal age are barred from entering a cannabis dispensary, even if they are with an adult.
Where to Buy
The question that we’re all asking: Where can I purchase recreational marijuana? There are quite a few ways in which Canadians will be able to get ahold of the plant, keeping in mind that each province/territory will have their own set of cannabis regulations.
Different provinces have taken a variety of unique approaches to determine where marijuana can be sold to citizens. These locations range anywhere from government-run liquor stores to publicly owned shops to privately owned shops and online dispensaries. No province has the same set of rules as another. One factor does remain consistent, though: all provinces allow you to purchase through online dispensaries such as Terra.
Rules by Province/Territory
As mentioned before, each province and territory has come up with their own specific set of regulations for purchasing marijuana. For example, the Cannabis Act states that any individual over the age of 18 can legally purchase cannabis, but many provinces have bumped the age to 19, aligning with the respective drinking age. Here’s how the rules break down by region:
Alberta: Ages 18 and over. You can purchase at licensed stores, at albertacannabis.org, or through other online dispensaries.
British Columbia: Ages 19 and over. You can purchase through online dispensaries, through government-run shops, or privately-run shops.
Manitoba: Ages 19 and over. Purchase through privately-owned shops and online dispensaries.
New Brunswick: Ages 19 and over. Purchase at one of twenty government-owned Cannabis NB retail stores or through online dispensaries.
Newfoundland and Labrador: Ages 19 and over. Purchase online at shopcannabisnl.com, at other online dispensaries, or at the Dominion/Loblaws grocery stores.
Northwest Territories: Ages 19 and over. Purchase through online dispensaries or private liquor stores.
Nova Scotia: Ages 19 and over. Purchase through online dispensaries or private liquor stores.
Nunavut: Ages 19 and over. Purchases will only initially be made available through online dispensaries. In-store purchases will become available in the future.
Ontario: Ages 19 and over. Purchase at government-owned Ontario Cannabis Stores or via online dispensaries.
Prince Edward Island: Ages 19 and over. Purchase at online dispensaries or via government-owned stores.
Quebec: Ages 18 and over. This province is more conservative with purchasing rules. You may purchase through government-owned Société Québécoise du Cannabis stores or via online dispensaries.
Saskatchewan: Ages 19 and over. Purchase through private retailers and online dispensaries.
Yukon: Ages 19 and over. Purchase through government-run brick-and-mortar shops and via online dispensaries.
Why Buying Online is Better
There are so many reasons why purchasing legal marijuana online is better than purchasing through a government-owned shop or in-store dispensary. These are some of the most important reasons:
Online stores, such as marijuana delivery dispensaries, generally have a much larger selection of products. They typically have large warehouses stocked with product as opposed to the small back-room of an in-store dispensary. Brick-and-mortar shops also can’t keep a lot of dry herb in-house due to its shelf time and aging. With online stores, there is much more flexibility.
The online dispensaries also have a much larger customer base, creating higher demand, forcing them to keep a wider variety of products in stock. In-store dispensaries are only going to keep their supply based on local demand and what products people tend to buy the most.
All online delivery services have their products located in one particular place. This means that you’re getting your product for the same price no matter where you are located (aside from changes in taxes, if applicable.) Storefront dispensaries have their prices change depending on location, and the cost of the product may be different depending on the area’s main suppliers.
Online dispensaries will additionally have a more consistent price because the overhead for delivered marijuana is fixed compared to their storefront counterparts. You may find, for example, that your favorite strain is cheaper online compared to in-store. The downfall to pricing, however, is that you have to pay to ship when purchasing online, although many companies offer free shipping once you reach a certain threshold.
Why do consumers shop online? It’s simple. Consumers are switching to online shopping for the convenience. When you buy online, you avoid many of the hassles associated with going to a store. No sitting in traffic, waiting in line, adhering to limited store hours or dealing with a commission-fueled salesperson. The ease of delivery is especially helpful for those with chronic or severe conditions which inhibit them from even leaving the house to drive to an actual store. For these patients, online shopping is the best route.
With online marketplaces, your product is delivered directly to your front door in discrete packaging. These shipments are smell proof, making it unlikely that anyone will know what is in your package until it is opened.
No Sales Team
As mentioned before, one of the biggest benefits of purchasing online is that there is no sales team trying to get a commission off of your purchase. A commission-based pay system means that employees get a small hourly rate plus a percentage of all sales they make. This means the person selling to you may be trying to push products that are more expensive or have higher sales incentives, while sacrificing customer satisfaction. When you are purchasing from an online dispensary, there is nobody there trying to make a buck off of you, giving you more time and freedom to explore the products you are most interested in.
When you are purchasing an item in-store, it can be difficult to find reviews for that product unless the dispensary or shop has a corresponding website. The only feedback that you get is from a sales associate working of commission, or another customer.
A study conducted by Influence Central determined that 71% of consumers believe online reviews are important factors when making purchases. When you’re purchasing from an online dispensary, who serves a much larger customer base, the reviews can be found right under the product, helping you to make a more informed decision, and providing you with a wider range of feedback than what you would get at a store. You’re also able to get reviews on the seller’s reputation and shipping time. Simply put, the more reviews a product or brand has, the more likely you are to make an informed purchase.
