With the current global political landscape in a state of turmoil, where fake news is real news and real news is lost in the noise—a bit of authenticity goes a long way. Especially given the context of the current leader of the United States, being a far cry from his predecessor. Trump is certainly not Obama, especially on their opinions on cannabis-use and legalization. Whereas Obama was known to enjoy a toke on occasion, Trump has been outspoken about reverting the progression the Obama government has made.

It can be downright depressing to hear a world leader now speak so conservatively about cannabis-legalization in light of the general-liberal public view of the plant. But let’s not focus on the negatives, we want to instead shine a light on the stories of former-president Obama and his history with smoking herb.

In a recent interview Obama speaks upon his adolescent years when he first began experimenting with cannabis. The story of Mr. Obama’s days of smoking began with his friends in Honolulu. Obama’s friend, Mark Bendix often served as chauffeur in his Volkswagen minibus, referred to by the crew as “the Choomwagon.” The group of teens would head off to Mount Tantalus, where they parked,

“turned up their stereos playing Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult and Stevie Wonder, lit up some ‘sweet-sticky Hawaiian buds’ and washed it down with ‘green bottled beer’ (the Choom Gang preferred Heineken, Becks, and St. Pauli Girl).”

Good times.

In David Maraniss’ biography “Barak Obama: The Story” he details that Obama was a champion weed smoker.

“When they were chooming in a car all the windows had to be rolled up so no smoke blew out and went to waste; when the pot was gone, they tilted their heads back and sucked in the last bit of smoke from the ceiling.” And Mr. Obama inspired the goal of “Total Absorption,” or “TA.”

When asked about his teenage years, Obama states

“But that’s what teenage kids did at that age when I was where I was growing up. Not everybody. Some were wiser than me. I wasn’t that wise.”

With that being said, Obama has since warned kids not to photograph themselves too much because “everything’s searchable.” Words of wisdom, although we have to admit it is refreshing to see a former global leader accept and embrace his past especially when it goes to prove that young people can smoke weed – and still become president.
